Workready Program
The Workready Program is a School-to-Work Transition Program that aims to assist and encourage Year 11 and 12 school students to take part in structured Vocational Education and Training (VET) that leads to a School-based Apprenticeship/Traineeship (SBAT) and hopefully, an ongoing apprenticeship.
The Workready Program, funded by the Department of Education and Training (DET), began in 2005 with two partner schools. The program is managed on behalf of DET by Group Training NT, in partnership with YouthWorX NT, and expanded to ten partner Secondary Schools in 2009: Australian Technical College – Darwin, Casuarina Senior College, Darwin High School, Kormilda College, Marrara Christian College, NT Open Education Centre, O’Loughlin Catholic College, Palmerston High School, St. John’s College and Taminmin High School.
Program Aims
- To provide Northern Territory young people (year 11 and 12) with options for identifying and pursuing their Career and Vocational Pathways;
- To expose these young people to a realistic perspective of the world of work and promote the opportunities in Northern Territory skill shortage areas.
Program Objectives
- To increase the number of Workready programs in the Northern Territory Secondary Schools by offering flexible curriculum arrangements for students who want to pursue a vocational education and training pathway to employment.;
- To increase the number of School Based Apprentices and Trainees (SBAT’s) in the Northern Territory, particularly in skill shortage areas.
Students participating in the Workready Program attend school to study for their NT Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) whilst also undertaking a range of activities such as VET in Schools course, Industry Tours, Structured Workplacements or School-based Apprenticeship/Traineeship. On completion of the Workready Program it is possible for students to have completed their NTCET and attained a Certificate II Vocational Qualification or part of a certificate III vocational Qualification.
The program also helps students prepare for the world of work by offering access to Apply First Aid Training, Drive Safe NT and Employability Skills workshops.
In 2007 approximately 150 Year 11 and 12 students participated in the Workready Program, preparing them for entry into the Northern Territory workforce. In 2008, 247 students were enrolled into the Workready Program, with over 367 students participating in 2009 through the 10 Workready Partner Schools.
