FAQs
From Employers
Do students get paid?
No. Students on Workplacement are unpaid and should not be given any gifts; the reason for this is that a payment of any sort will cause the insurance cover to become invalid.
Who pays insurance costs?
The NT Department of Education and Training (DET) covers students for insurance.
What skills will the student want to practice?
Most students have a Training Plan which will be sent to you before the placement. Students should also discuss what skills they want to practice when they call you before the placement.
How much supervision will the student require?
This will depend on the kind of task the student is doing and their existing skills. Generally though students can be shown how to do a task and then left to complete it with minimal supervision.
Do I record the students progress?
Most students bring a Training Logbook to their Workplacement which has a section for supervisors to mark off each skill the student practices.
What paperwork do I have to complete?
You will need to…
Sign an Employer Workplacement Agreement
Sign a Student Time Sheet
Mark off skills the student has practiced in the Students Training Logbook or Training Plan
Complete a Workplacement Evaluation
What if there is an accident?
You will need to…
Seek medical help immediately
Contact the student's emergency number and their school recorded in their Training Logbook
Ask the doctor attending the student for a medical certificate
Complete an accident report of the incident and forward to the school.
What if the Student is absent, or does not return from a break?
Students have been advised to contact both YouthWorX NT & their Supervisor in they will be absent for any reason. If the student is absent and you have not been contacted by the student or YouthWorX NT, call YouthWorX NT immediately. We will then follow up the appropriate channels.

What do I do if I am sick?
If you are not well and can not attend your Workplacement, you will need to contact both YouthWorX NT and your Supervisor to let them know.
What if I am running late?
Contact your supervisor immediately to let them know you are running late, general practice if you are an employee and most importantly, it saves people from worrying unnecessarily about
your welfare.
I have an exam or something booked the same time as my Workplacement?
Firstly, you were meant to check these dates before you applied for your Workplacement! However, accidents do happen, so if the prior commitment can not be broken, contact YouthWorX NT immediately to attempt to organise new Workplacement dates.
I am having trouble finding appropriate clothing for my Workplacement?
Your VET Trainer should be able to point you in the right direction or organise something for you to loan for the duration of the Workplacement.
Trouble with transport?
This is one of the most common problems for students in rural areas. You may need to negotiate working hours with your Host Employer to work around bus timetables, or car pooling with other students who are doing their Workplacement on the same days as you. Where there is a will there is a way. If your still stuck, talk to your VET Trainer.
